Two One-Week Sessions Available

June 10-16, 2018; August 12-18, 2018

Experience the thrill of re-discovering history at Fairfield Plantation. Fairfield showcased one of Virginia’s magnificent manor houses, an architectural enigma once surrounded by 7,000 acres of tobacco fields and forestland at the heart of Gloucester County, just north of Williamsburg. This project is an opportunity to try your hand at archaeology enhanced by 3D technology. AiP volunteers, known as jammers, will have a full week of activities, including instruction in excavation techniques and cutting edge 3D practices.

Standard fee with lodging in double room is USD940. Special student rates USD250 without lodging, USD680 with lodging. Resident rate without lodging is USD250. Fee for week in single room is USD1090.

For full details, see the project description page:

Less expensive, yet relatively close alternatives include Norfolk International and Richmond International (both are 90 minute drives). Rental cars are available at each destination. If you prefer not to rent a car, pick up from the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport can be arranged.

Drop off can be arranged at Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.

This workshop will involve hands-on archaeology during the Virginia summer. Summer in Gloucester can be hot and humid with daytime average highs of 32 C (90 F) and we will be working both inside and outside. Bring sufficient clothing that is appropriate for the weather as well as protective while working. A swimsuit will come in handy, too. It is hot, can be buggy, and you will get dirty. Please be conscious that safety is an important issue at any work site.
